Madang, Papua New Guinea
The Madang Commercial Centre is a mixed-use complex comprising of commercial retail shopfront tenancies, commercial offices and a large hardware Store. In designing for a mix-use complex, the project presented a unique opportunity to fit its differing programs and their differing requirements. Consequently, the site has been divided into 2 buildings. Building 1, a 2-storey edifice which houses 6 x retail shopfront tenancies on the ground floor and commercial offices in level 1 and Building 2, a large single storey warehouse. Building 1 has been arranged to wrap around the corner block in an L-shape footprint, addressing its street frontages and activating the ground floor for pedestrian circulation. Building 2, has been placed at the rear of the site with a one-way road which enables access.
Aesthetically, the project utilizes 2 main colours and claddings, defining the ground floor program to that of level 1. Yet despite the differing programs and tenancies the building is intended to read as one congruent complex.
